Arnaud Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Against Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted around the City Ground as Nottingham Forest supporters reveled in another success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has happened since Francis's decisive header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but the club still cherish those memories. Similarly, major changes have occurred in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and securing a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Third Straight Win
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and added to the positive energy gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of Forest’s historic triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any real tension or nerves.
It proved to be an occasion filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third clash between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
The home side leaned into the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from then were also present. The two clubs enjoyed a meal together prior to the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company received a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the field 15 minutes before the start, and a typically impressive display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the remaining section was revealed as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it stated. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough watching events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Outset
So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, too. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a two-goal lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the path of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to score his maiden strike since March.
Second Strike Seals Dominance
The scorer was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the rebound from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.
Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off Malmö back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City striker Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic had earlier had a powerful header smartly saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalie Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was that kind of nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also netted three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the second half.
Smooth Night for Forest
It proved a hiccup-free evening for Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the game already boxed off and later introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, too.
