Explosion Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Operation in Italy
Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the property near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and another man who escaped following the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, adding that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
