Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight season.

And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the club leadership.

Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.

However the former Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.

The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the process of hiring a fresh manager.

Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by the club in December last year.

The ex- West Ham United player is out of work meaning Wolves would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
